Insurance Programs As a member of any Louisiana Home Builders Association, you are eligible for special insurance programs for both workers' comp and general liability through the HomeBuilders SIF and LHBA's General Liability Trust. HomeBuilders Self Insurers Fund (SIF) Created in 1979, the HomeBuilders Self Insurers Fund began in response to the turmoil of the commercial insurance marketplace. Insurance carriers were exiting Louisiana, and builders and contractors were faced with rising insurance costs, poor service and mounting problems. The answer was the HomeBuilders Self Insurers Fund – a workers’ compensation program built specifically for the construction industry. The program was built by a group of visionary builders with an eye towards longevity, affordability and financial stability. The original mission of the fund may have been to serve homebuilders, but today the program helps so many more. Not only are residential and commercial builders enjoying the success of the program, but SIF also now provides workers comp to many trade contractors, suppliers and a host of related industry businesses. LHBA General Liability Trust (GLT) LHBA's General Liability Trust was formed in much the same way as the HomeBuilders SIF. Unlike a normal insurance company, the Trust is owned and controlled by the builders, all of whom are required to be members of LHBA. Because of this, the Trust can pay dividends once surplus monies are available to return. The Trust offers a value to the builder that cannot be matched by any other general liability provider and offers general liability at cost.
